Visa Subclass 500 – Student Visa (from 1/7/2016)

This visa is for students who want to come to Australia to study at a registered education institution.

  • You can study a registered full-time course in Australia.
  • Eligible family members can accompany you to Australia.
  • You and your family members can generally work up to 40 hours per fortnight when course is in session and unlimited hours when course is not in session
  • You can generally stay in Australia until your course is finished.

Requirements: 

  • Applied for and been accepted to study in a registered full-time course at an educational institution in Australia
  • Organised appropriate welfare arrangements for the duration of your intended stay in Australia if you are under 18 years of age
  • Minimum IELTS 5.5 if not:
    • IELTS 5.0 combined with 10 weeks ELICOS
    • IELTS 4.5 combined with 20 weeks ELICOS
  • Provide evidence of financial capacity and adequate health insurance

Visa Subclass 570 – Independent ELICOS Sector

This visa is for international students who want to study English Language Intensive Courses for Overseas Students (ELICOS) in Australia. This includes:

  • courses that lead to a certificate I, II, III or IV
  • courses that result in no formal Australian award.

Visa Subclass 571 – Schools Sector

This visa is designed for international students applying to study in Australia and whose main course of study is:

  • a primary school course
  • a secondary school course, including junior and senior secondary or
  • an approved secondary school exchange program.​

Visa Subclass 572 – Vocational Education and Training Sector

This visa is designed for international students applying to study in Australia and whose main course of study is:

  • a certificate I, II, III and IV (except ELICOS)
  • a VET diploma
  • a VET advanced diploma
  • a vocational graduate certificate
  • a vocational graduate diploma.

Visa Subclass 573 – Higher Education Sector

This visa is designed for international students applying to study in Australia and whose main course of study is one of the following:

  • Bachelor degree
  • associate degree
  • graduate certificate
  • graduate diploma
  • Masters by coursework
  • Higher Education diploma
  • Higher Education advanced diploma.

Visa Subclass 574 – Postgraduate Research Sector

This visa is designed for international students who want to study a Masters degree by research or a Doctoral degree in Australia.

Visa Subclass 575 – Non-Award Sector

This visa is designed for international students who want to study the following courses in Australia:

  • a non-award foundation studies course
  • other full-time course (or components of a course) that does not lead to an Australian award.
