If you want to work in early childhood in Melbourne, there are two very different study routes. One is the vocational route (Certificate III and Diploma of Early Childhood Education and Care), which leads to work as an Early Childhood Educator. The other is the Bachelor of Early Childhood Education, which leads to work as a registered Early Childhood Teacher (ECT).

They are not simply "shorter" and "longer" versions of the same thing. The job you can hold, the registration you need and the realistic path to permanent residency are all different.

Route 1: Certificate III to Diploma

Most students package CHC30121/CHC30125 Certificate III with CHC50121/CHC50125 Diploma over about two years, combining classroom study with supervised placement in a childcare centre. After graduating, the usual sequence is graduate visa (485), then employment with a centre that is willing to sponsor a subclass 482 Skills in Demand visa, and later a subclass 186 employer nomination for permanent residency. A slower alternative is to move into a management occupation such as Child Care Centre Manager and pursue state nomination, but this requires genuine management experience.

The strengths are lower cost, a shorter timeline and the ability to earn while you progress. The main dependency is finding an employer willing to sponsor you.

Route 2: Bachelor of Early Childhood Education

A three-year degree leads to work as an Early Childhood Teacher. In Victoria this requires teacher registration, which has a significantly higher English requirement than a student or skilled visa. After the degree you can apply for the Post-Higher Education Work stream of the 485 visa, complete an AITSL skills assessment and then pursue points-tested migration (189, 190 or 491) or employer nomination.

The strength of this route is flexibility: you are not dependent on a single sponsor. The trade-offs are cost, time and the English threshold for registration.

A third option: Diploma first, degree later

You can also start with the Diploma, begin working, and later transfer into a Bachelor with credit. If you already hold a bachelor degree from your home country, a Graduate Diploma in Early Childhood Teaching can be a much shorter path to teacher registration.
